Video: Saudi Arabia reveals progress on international airport project

By Catrin Jones14 August 2023

Drone footage shows the progress of building the Red Sea International Airport in Saudi Arabia, designed by UK-based Foster + Partners and developed by Red Sea Global (RSG).

Commencing in 2021, the construction of the Red Sea International Airport is situated 15 kilometres inland from the coastline of the Red Sea. The airport’s distinctively curved structure and layout are said to have been planned to imitate the natural characteristics of the surrounding desert. The design features five pod-like structures resembling sand dunes, artistically arranged around a central area designated for drop-off and pick-up.

Anticipated to have the capacity to serve up to one million passengers annually by the year 2030, the primary visitors to the airport will be tourists who are interested in exploring the Red Sea Project.

“The Red Sea International Airport has been envisaged as a gateway to one of the most unique resorts in the world and a part of the visitor experience. Inspired by the colours and textures of the desert landscape, the design seeks to create a calm and luxurious journey through the terminal and will become a transit hub for visitors coming in by both land and air,” says Gerard Evenden, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners.
