Leighton Contractors (India) was awarded an AU$ million (US$ 78 million) EPC contract, in a joint venture with Oriental Structural Engineers, on the NHAI’s (National Highways Authority of India) North South Corridor Project in Uttar Pradesh, India.
The joint venture was responsible for the design and construction of four lanes of NH2 from Agra to Bharatpur, straddling both the Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan States. The dualling of this 45 km-long single-lane carriageway required embankment fill, road re-alignment and construction of 94 structures, including concrete box culverts, underpasses and minor bridges.
Over a 20-month period the work included: major excavations from borrow pits; blasting and crushing of all aggregates for the project; production of all road pavement materials and concrete; foundations and superstructure to all new bridges and structures; traffic signage and road markings to the asphalt pavement; street lighting and service roads in urban areas; drainage, minor landscaping and minor reforestation works; toll plazas, administration building, rest areas and bus shelters; and preparatory work, including relocation of all services such as water, electricity, fibre optic cables and route clearance, etc.
The project started in September 2006 and was finished in June 2009.
