The Wyaralong Dam Project was declared a "significant project", and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was prepared in accordance with the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971.

Proponent QWI nominated the project as a 'controlled action' under the Federal Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act 1999, which required a statutory review process by the Commonwealth Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

The purpose of the EIS was to identify environmental effects and propose actions to eliminate or mitigate those that will impact adversely on the natural, social, cultural or economic environment. It also advised on means to maximise positive environmental impacts.
