Windy lift power

25 April 2008

Sub-contractor Daewon Crane has used its 400 tonne capacity Manitowoc Model 16000 crawler crane, fitted with an 84 m heavy lift boom, to install 49 wind turbines at Gangwon Wind Power Park, Kangwondo, South Korea.

To complete the work Daewon Crane fitted the 16000 with an adjustable 90 tonne capacity pin-on upper boom point. Manitowoc designed this attachment especially for wind turbine installation as it provides an extra 7 m of reach.

Each tower consists of a lower tower, an upper tower, a nacelle, and a rotor with blades. The heaviest part is the 73 tonne nacelle, which attaches to the 60 m upper tower. However, the most challenging task is the placement of the 40 tonne rotors, as each of the three blades measures 40 m in length.
