What to expect at RecyclingAktiv

After two years, Europe’s trade fairs are back, with exhibitors at Germany’s RecyclingAktiv among the first to show for 2022.

The event, which takes place in Karlsruhe from 5 to 7 May, will – along with the co-located Tiefbau Live road construction and civil engineering exhibition – attract close to 200 exhibitors. And the organiser Messe Karlsruhe says everyone is looking forward to in-person discussions and seeing the new machinery up close.

“The visitors, exhibitors and we in the organising team are really looking forward to the event,” said project manager Olivia Hogenmüller.

“The industry has waited so long to once again experience machinery and innovations live, compare them and judge how they can solve the challenges they face in their own businesses. From the latest plant systems and electrical drives to digital software solutions, visitors will receive an excellent overview of the trends and developments within the sector.”

These developments include exhibits in the demolition and recycling sectors. Zeppelin is set to present the Cat 340 UHD Ultra High Demolition excavator. Developed for heavy demolition work on high-rise buildings, it features a working height said to be 13% more than the previous model, the Cat 340F UHD.

According to Zeppelin, this makes it suitable for use on buildings with up to eight storeys. A variety of undercarriages, booms and sticks, together with a range of Cat demolition attachments, make the machine more flexible for users.

Thanks to the machine’s coupling system, the boom can be replaced in just minutes without the need for special tools, enabling quick adjustment to the current working height. The Cat 340 UHD is based on technology from the latest generation of Cat excavators, with electro-hydraulic pilot control, newly developed comfort cabin and a host of assistance systems for greater efficiency and reduced fuel consumption.

Versatile demolition equipment

The Wirtgen Group will show the Mobicat MC 110(i) EVO2 mobile jaw crusher from Kleemann, which is described as flexible and versatile in both transport and operation. During the development of the mobile jaw crusher plant, Kleemann concentrated on the requirements of demolition and construction companies and contractors.

With an hourly output of up to 400 t/hr, the new mobile jaw crusher meets the requirements in the medium to upper output range. The plant impresses in recycling applications where the main objective is effective coarse crushing. A highlight of this machine is its new and effective multi-stage overload system, which recognises overload situations caused by hard, unbreakable material.

As a result, the company says the system avoids unwanted downtime, increasing availability and overall output. Kleemann also offers support to operators in everyday work with the intuitive Spective control system and the new digital solution Spective Connect. Components such as a radio remote control and a small radio remote control have been integrated and the digital solution sends all important plant data to a smartphone.

Liebherr will use the occasion of RecyclingAktiv to premier its new GMM 50 multi-tine grapple. The five-tine grapple has been fully redeveloped and is mainly used in machinery classes ranging from 35 to 55 t. It is intended for efficient material handling in the scrap and recycling sector.

Technological solutions for recycling

Digital solutions for recycling are also represented. Wastebox has developed an app that digitally maps out the entire disposal process. It connects customers and suppliers in real time, allowing them to organise the disposal of construction waste quickly and transparently. All information is captured in real time, combined in a central online platform and displayed clearly. Data analytics technology continuously assesses the data and provides it online at all times.

By using this app, disposal logistics companies can continuously optimise their operations. They can reduce their ecological footprint and make all transactions climate neutral.

Also on show will be the latest dust suppression machines from Paal. These are equipped with CURT control software, enabling remote control and monitoring of the machine in real time. By inputting certain information, such as various weather conditions or light barriers, users can define when and how the system switches on and off automatically to combat dust or odours that are regularly caused by certain work processes. This automates the process of dust and odour protection, increasing energy efficiency and preserving resources.

As well as individual exhibitors, there will be a special “attachments arena”, which is appearing at the event for the first time. The organiser says: “The attachments arena is an exclusive tool platform that will provide a fantastic stage for a selection of attachments used in everyday construction.”

Exhibitors will have three options to demonstrate their attachments:

■ Ground preparation – tiltrotators, buckets, bucket separators, attached compactors, levelling tools

■ Demolition – demolition pincers, hammers, pulverisers, sorting grippers, cutting buckets, demolition skips

■ Recycling – screen buckets, further screening technology, blade separators, jaw crusher buckets, folding or high-tipping shovels.

Also at the exhibition will be a start up zone, in association with Coreum, that will focus on solutions from young businesses, while the SBM Summit for sustainable business materials will take place on 6 May.

Mixed feelings for German construction

While RecyclingAktiv returns as an in-person event, the German construction equipment industry is facing 2022 with confidence – but with supply chain problems causing a gap between incoming orders and turnover.

Figures from the VDMA trade association show that in 2021 the construction machinery and building material plant sector achieved a 22% increase in turnover to €16.7 billion, with the construction equipment sector achieving a nominal increased of 18% to €12.4 billion, Nevertheless, expectations for turnover this year are cautious.

“We are pushing a wave of orders ahead of us that will probably have to carry on into 2023 if the situation remains like this,” says Joachim Strobel, chairman of the VDMA’s construction equipment division.

“Despite full order books, the industry can only expect a maximum increase in turnover of 7% for the current year. Profit will also fall short of our expectations because we have to contend with enormously increased costs.”

The USA, Europe and China remain the most important market regions and together account for 75% of the global market. Construction equipment sales in 2021 increased by 30% in the US and 28% in Europe compared to last year.

At the top of the agenda for construction equipment manufacturers are reducing CO2 and advancing digitalisation. Like the recycling sector, construction also views the return of trade fairs as important, notably Bauma in October.

“We are all looking forward to our presence trade fairs. At last, we can again show on a large scale what technical progress we have already worked out so that we can achieve the climate policy goals,” said Franz-Josef Paus, chairman of VDMA Construction.

The VDMA represents more than 3,400 German and European mechanical and plant engineering companies.
