Volvo Penta issued Stage IIIB certification

Volvo Penta has been issued Stage IIIB certification for its 13 litre engine family.

The certification, issued by the Swedish test authority in accordance with the European Commission (EC) emissions directive 2010/26/EC, means the engine manufacturer is eight months ahead of the deadline laid down by the EC.

Speaking at the Bauma show just after the certification was issued, Volvo Penta spokesman Darren Tasker told CE, "Certification of the 13 litre engine family makes Volvo Penta one of the first engine manufacturers to have a fully tested and certified Stage IIIB engine system."

The company has a 16 strong range of Stage IIIB compliant engines with power outputs of between 129 and 515 kW. "A key aim for us in attaining compliance was to develop an engine and emissions treatment solution that had minimal installation impact for OEMs, while also offering end-users with a fuel efficient engine," Said Mr Tasker.

"Our selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system has been designed for ease of installation so the transition for OEMs to Stage IIIB compliance has minimal impact on equipment."

Volvo Penta's Stage IIIB compliant engine range is based on the company's existing Stage IIIA six cylinder engine blocks with displacements of 7, 13 and 16 litres, along with a 4,8 l four cylinder unit.
