US$ 1 billion Bangkok rail contract awarded

A joint venture led by Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction (60%) has won a THB 29.8 billion (US$ 1 billion) contract to construct part of a new commuter rail system in the Thai capital, Bangkok.

The SU joint venture also includes light rail specialist Unique Engineering (40%). Awarded by State Railway of Thailand, the contract involves the construction of 6.2 km of elevated railway for the planned Red Line mass-transit system in the city, as well as the construction of two stations – Bang Sue Grand Station and Chatuchak station.

In addition, the contract includes construction of a depot, stabling yard with train operation control building, drainage systems, a flyover and roads.

Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction said its share of the contract was worth THB 17.9 billion (US$ 601 million). Construction is scheduled to take two years.
