Strabag to renovate historic railway station in Prague

Austrian engineering group Strabag, operating through its Czech subsidiary Strabag Rail, is heading up the extensive renovation and upgrade of the historic Masaryk Railway Station in Prague, Czechia.

The historic Masaryk railway station in Prague, Czechia Strabag will spend 44 months upgrading the historic Masaryk railway station in Prague, Czechia

The station is one of the oldest in Czechia and currently caters to over 40,000 daily passengers.

Construction on the €137 million project – commissioned by the Czech railway administration Správa železnic – is expected to start in January 2024, and run for approximately 44 months.

The scope of work includes increasing the number of tracks to the platforms from seven to nine, adapting existing platforms for barrier-free access, renewing crossovers, signalling technology and overhead lines, as well as constructing additional passing tracks.

Engineering and logistical challenges

The centrepiece of the project will be a triangular steel platform above the tracks, spanning 8,600m3. This will serve as a pedestrian link between Hybernská and Na Florenci streets, facilitating access to the platforms and easing transfers to the Prague Metro and adjacent landmark buildings designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.

Moritz Freyborn, Strabag division manager for the Czech Republic, said the complex project would present some engineering challenges and would requiring the close coordination of the individual trades, with works being carried out in a very confined space with virtually no restrictions to railway operations.

“We are looking forward to demonstrating our technical and consulting expertise on this challenging landmark project in the Czech capital,” he said.

The renovation project will boost the station’s capacity but also to seamlessly integrate it into its urban surroundings.
