Runway extension

25 April 2008

Carlsbad's McClellan-Palomar Airport is one of the busiest single runway airports in the US, serving northern San Diego County and Southern California. More than 400 aircraft are based at the facility.

Recently, changes have been made to the runway safety area, including extending the runway east and west to meet Federal Aviation Administration required over-run lengths. About 182 m was added to the west, and about 61 m to the east. Large areas of taxiway and aircraft parking were also removed to make room for several new buildings.

This created a huge amount of concrete and asphalt demolition waste that needed to be dealt with. Because the area was very confined and the runway and taxiways had to remain open AMG Demolition & Environmental used its compact Rubble Master RM80 impact crusher. About 13200 tonnes of concrete and asphalt from the old taxiways and aircraft parking areas was processed within a month, despite the fact that everytime an aircraft took-off or landed work had to stop - the wings of the aircraft intruded on the work site.

Once screened, using OS80 belt mounted screen, the 0-25 mm aggregate was re-used as base course under the new taxi way and aircraft parking area.
