Rocky Mountain high on wind energy

US utilities company Rocky Mountain Power has announced it will spend US$3.5 billion on wind energy transmission projects between now and 2037.

The firm further said it would be producing up to 1,100 MW of new wind energy by 2020, primarily from projects within the US state of Wyoming.

In a joint project with Idaho Power, the firm is also progressing the Gateway West transmission line project, incorporating the construction of substations to distribute current and future electricity sources.

Rocky Mountain Power’s president and CEO, Cindy Crane said the Wyoming-based projects will have the capacity to create between 1,000 and 1,400 construction jobs, while increasing energy production by 14 to 32%.

“These investments will help diversify the state’s economy, create jobs and add to the tax base,” she said.
