Putzmeister America was showcasing its new MX 43/47Z-Meter placing boom at ConExpo - said to be the largest placing boom in the industry that does not require a counterweight.

Using the same maneuverable boom as Putzmeister's 47Z-Meter truck-mounted concrete boom pump, the five-section MX 43/47Z has 42.1 m of horizontal reach, making it well-suited for jobs such as high-rise buildings, bridges and dams.

Jim Bury, director of engineering for Putzmeister America, said, "Not needing a counterweight saves our customers time and reduces their labour costs which is a huge advantage these days. In addition, the placing boom takes up less space without the counterweight, making the job site less congested."

The placing boom can operate with either a diesel or electric power pack and can also adapt to any lattice tower with a cross section of 2.3 m by 2.3 m, allowing the larger boom to be integrated into existing placing system equipment.

Meanwhile, Putzmeister America also introduced its new MX TB placing conveyors at ConExpo - machines designed for large, civil projects that require placement of mass quantities of concrete, such as dams, hydroelectric powerhouses, coal power plants and nuclear plants.

There are two different models that make up the MX TB placing conveyor line, the MX TB 130 and the MX TB 600. The former conveys up to 102 mm aggregate on a 457 mm belt and the later conveys up to 152 mm aggregate on a 610 mm belt. Both placing conveyors can also handle up to 305 mm concrete slump.

A portable hopper feeds concrete onto a large feeder conveyor that then conveys the concrete into the MX TB's feeder belt and hopper. The MX TB 130's five-section telescopic placing conveyor offers a 39 m horizontal reach and the MX TB 600's four-section telescopic placing conveyor features a horizontal reach of up to 31.08 m.

Power for both models comes from a 208 hp (155 kW) diesel power pack with a Deutz engine. The MX TB 130 can deliver up to 4.60 m3/min, while the MX TB 600 offers 7.65m3/min maximum output.
