Onshore construction underway on huge Polish energy project

The Orlen Group and Northland Power have started construction work on an onshore substation for the Baltic Power offshore wind farm.

The substation, located in Poland’s Choczewo municipality, will serve as a hub for the transmission of electricity from the offshore substations, situated some 23km offshore.

The offshore wind farm, with a total construction value of more than €2.1 billion, will comprise 76 wind turbines - each exceeding 200m in height - covering an area of approximately 130km2.

Regarding the onshore element of the project, Orlen Group said approximately 7km of the onshore cable will be routed underground and will be buried at a depth of approximately 10km where it makes landfall, using directional drilling techniques to minimise interference with the natural environment and bypass ecologically valuable areas.

A consortium consisting of power company GE and Polish energy contractor Enprom will have responsibility for the design, construction and delivery of the onshore substation.

GE, in addition to designing the electrical system, has provided high-voltage power components, while Enprom has contributed to the design and will oversee the construction of the substation.

In September 2022, the Baltic Power joint venture announced its preferred suppliers for all key onshore and offshore components of the wind farm, including foundations, wind turbines, substations, and cables.

Mike Crawley, president of the Management Board of Northland Power, said, “We are all the more glad that the Baltic Power project is reaching another…important milestone. Our farm, the construction of which will be commenced in 2024, will secure the first supplies of green energy for Poland in just a few years, as planned.”
