Olympic construction

In 2010 the Winter Olympics freestyle skiing and snowboarding events will be hosted by Canada’s Cypress Mountain Ski resort, near Vancouver. The opening ceremony for the games may be more than three years away but the area is already a hive of construction activity.

But carrying out earthwork on slopes suitable for downhill skiing calls for some specialist equipment and the main contractor North Construction is using a fleet of Volvo A30D articulated dump trucks for the task. Construction of the ski runs involves hauling rock bedding for trenches and moving more than 4000 m3 of topsoil over steep terrain to dress the ski runs.

North Construction’s scope of work also includes construction of the aerial freestyle skiing venue, as well as building chair lifts, snow making towers and installing communication and lighting systems.
