New Cairo metro contract for Vinci and Bouygues

18 April 2016

Vinci Construction Grands Projects and Bouygues Construction have secured a new joint-venture contract to work on the Cairo metro.

The € 1.1 billion (US$ 1.24 billion) 67-month project includes the construction of 17.7 km of line, along with 15 new stations.

The project, known as Phase 3 of Line 3, was awarded by the National Authority for Tunnels, and continues a working partnership with Vinci and Bouygues that extends back to 1981.

Once completed, the Cairo metro’s length will increase to approximately 100 km of line, serving around 5 million passengers a day in North Africa’s largest city.

According to the Vinci press release, the new project will generate up to 5,000 jobs, as well as benefiting a large number of French SMEs. It is reported, for example, that the previous phase of construction – also carried out by Vinci and Bouygues – called on more than 600 French SMEs as suppliers and subcontractors.
