Komatsu intelligent machine control excavators for Europe

04 August 2014

Komatsu has launched its intelligent machine control excavators in Europe. The PC210LCi-10, unveiled as a prototype at last year’s Bauma exhibition, features a new machine control and guidance system that improves accuracy, efficiency and safety.

Komatsu says its control and guidance system means the operator will no longer have to worry about digging too deep or damaging a target surface, improving efficiency, precision and safety on site.

The system starts with a factory installed, fully integrated machine control system that includes stroke sensing hydraulic cylinders for the boom, arm and bucket, developed by Komatsu for precise, real-time bucket edge positioning. The Inertial Measuring Unit (IMU) gives precise machine orientation and determines machine angle from gyro and accelerometer data, while an on-board GNSS receiver is used to provide the real time position of the machine. This information is used to automatically prevent digging beyond the target depth on any given task.

Mal McCoy, product manager for hydraulic excavators and intelligent machine control products said, “This latest Komatsu technology is a revolution in how hydraulic excavators will be used in the coming years. The ability of the PC210LCi-10 to achieve and maintain grade with minimum effort from the operator is awesome”.

Komatsu says its system lets the operator focus on moving material efficiently, without worrying about digging too deep. The touch screen control box features a facing angle compass, a light bar and audio guidance and displays information such as real-time “as-built” status, a magnified fine grading view or a 3D plan view.

The company says that by setting 3D design data on the control box monitor, staking can be reduced or eliminated, as can surveying and final inspection. Safety can also be greatly improved, with less people needed on site and near the machine.

The PC210LCi-10’s operating weight varies from 22.6 to 23.5 tonnes, depending on options and configuration, with a 123 kW engine. Other specifications are identical to those for the

Komatsu PC210LC-10.
