Impregilo has won a € 250 million contract to build the El Quimbo hydroelectric power plant in Columbia.

The Italian construction group said the new plant will be located in the Department of Huila on the Magdalena River and construction work will take about four years.

The El Quimbo project will include a main dam 150 m high and 635 m long, and a secondary dam 66 m high and 410 m long.

The contract tender for the planned 400 MW plant was organised by EMGESA, Columbia's largest electricity company.

Impregilo is currently already working on a second hydroelectric plant in Columbia, the Sogamoso power station.

Construction began at the start of the year and the contract is worth approximately € 400 million, according to the company.

Impregilo added that it has also tendered successfully for the Ruta del Sol motorway concession - a "strategically important" project involving construction work worth approximately US$ 1 billion and aggregate management revenues for about US$ 3.7 billion over 25 years.
