UAE: property developer Nakheel has announced Phase One of The Palm Jumeirah is on schedule, with the first residents expected to move onto the island by the end of 2006.

The first phase of construction includes 1350 villas on 11 of the island's fronds and 2650 Shoreline Apartments. It has taken 94 million m3 of sand and 7 million tonnes of rock to create the world's largest man-made, which measures about 5 by 5 km, creating 560 ha of land and adding 78 km to the Dubai coastline. Eight of the 32 hotels have also begun construction including the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa and the Atlantis.

The Golden Mile, which is located along the centre of the trunk, and is expected ton be completed in 2008, will include a shops, offices and residential buildings covering about 60000 m2. It will also house the Palm Monorail's Gateway Station, two intermediate stations with the Atlantis Station situated on the crescent.
