Hydroelectric contracts worth US$ 353 million awarded in Malaysia

20 December 2010

Malaysian power utility Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has awarded three contracts worth MYR 1.1 billion (US$ 353 million) for the construction of dams, hydro turbines and generators at the Hulu Terengganu Hydroelectric project.

The renewable energy project is situated in the north-eastern peninsular of Malaysia in the Terengganu region, upstream of Kenyir Lake.

It involves the construction of two dams and the installation of two hydro turbines and generators in an underground power station with a total installed capacity of 250 mW.

Local civil and structural engineering company Loh & Loh Construction won a US$ 263.3 million contract in a joint venture agreement with Sinohydro Corporation to carry out the main civil works.

This includes the construction of two dams, a water transfer tunnel and an underground power house.

Meanwhile, a US$ 76.8 million contract was awarded to Alstom Projects India and Alstom Hydro Malaysia for the design, manufacture, erection, testing and commissioning of two 125 mW generating plants.

The third US$ 13.1 million agreement was with SNC-Lavalin, SNC-Lavalin Power (Malaysia), KTA Tenaga and G & P Professionals.

TNB said this consortium would provide detailed engineering design for the main civil works together with an engineering design review for the electrical and mechanical works, project management and site supervision.

The facility is expected to be operational by October 2015.
