HLG to build record-breaking reservoirs

08 April 2015

Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG), a joint venture between UAE-based Al Habtoor and Australia’s Leighton, has won the QAR 2.22 billion (US$ 608 million) contract to construct what are believed to be the largest reinforced concrete reservoirs in the world. The client for the project is Qatar’s General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA).

HLG, operating as Leighton Contracting (Qatar) is responsible for the construction, testing and commissioning of five reservoirs as well as pumping stations, pipe work, mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and external work on the 100 Ha Mega Reservoir Primary Reservoir and Pumping Stations (PRPS) scheme at Rawdat Rashed, Qatar. Each of the reservoirs will have the capacity of 100 million gallons (455,000 m3).

HLG said this was the seventh project it had been awarded by KAHRAMAA, with the first coming in 2009.

José A. López-Monis, CEO of HLG said, “Qatar is a very important market for HLG. We have had a local office in Doha since 2005, and during this time we have been involved in a number of projects perfectly aligned with our expertise and experience.

“Securing repeat business from key government clients demonstrates that HLG remains a preferred contractor for clients to whom we have demonstrated our ability to deliver complex projects safely, on time and on budget.”

Work on the project is due to start this month, with completion scheduled for the second quarter of 2018.
