Going underground
25 April 2008
Enabling works for development of a new subway transit terminal to serve the redeveloped World Trade Centre in New York, US are being carried out by German foundation contractor Bauer. The contractor is using jet grouting techniques to install a sub-surface cut off wall to act as a retaining wall and block groundwater flow during construction of the new concourse below Dey Street.
The number of existing services and infrastructure meant that access to the site was limited but the work needed to be completed quickly to keep the project on schedule. Bauer used a specially developed jet grouting rig to get around the 2.1 m clearance on the site and worked in shifts to complete the work in six weeks.
