Friday round-up: Cat’s AI predictions, huge Saudi opportunities, Volvo’s tough Q1

This has been a week dominated by a couple of recurring themes: technology’s growing influence on construction and Saudi Arabia’s huge ambitions to build iconic projects.

Caterpillar has set out its view on how artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionise its business and by extension how the entire construction equipment market approaches things like monitoring machine condition and interacting with machines.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Arabian construction market remains fascinating. Neom announced that it had invited over 100 global contractors to learn more about opportunities on the $550bn project in person.

But are some projects simply too ambitious? There was also news that the 170km-long linear city the Line could be scaled back.

Separately, Construction Technology has released a video interview with Paul Surin, head of digital and IT at the massive Trojena project about how gaming tech is revolutionising the project.

Bringing us back down to earth a little was news of Volvo’s Q1 results, in which it admitted it is feeling the effects of a market downturn.

Finally, if you missed it, take a look at Mitch Keller’s report on the appointment of a technical advisor for what could become the world’s first ‘ship tunnel’ in Norway.
