Crush triggers rebuild

25 April 2008

Saudi Arabia: The human crush that killed 360 pilgrims on the Jamarat Bridge in Mena, Saudi Arabia, during the Muslim festival of Hajj in January has led to a reconstruction programme. The Jamarat Bridge, the scene of similar crowd trouble in 1994 and 2004 in which more than 500 people were killed, is being rebuilt to prevent future accidents.

Contractor Saudi Bin Ladin has started to demolish the bridge. The rebuilding scheme is expected to take three years but the first phase will be completed in time for next year's Hajj.
