Cemex chairman & CEO dies

Lorenzo Zambrano, chairman & CEO of Cemex, has died in Madrid, Spain aged 70. The cause of death has not been given by the company, which said operations and management would continue as usual. A successor has not yet been named.

Mr Zambrano joined Cemex in 1968 and held several positions before being named director of operations in 1981. In 1985 he was appointed CEO and in 1995 was elected chairman of the board of directors. He served a total of 35 years as a director of the company, having first taken a seat on the board in 1979.

Mr Zambrano’s other directorships included Cementos Chihuahua, IBM, Enseñanza e Investigación Superior, A.C. and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey A.C. (MARCO). He had also previously been a member of the chairman’s Council of Daimler Chrysler until July 2005, was a member of the Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business Advisory Council until 2006, among other posts.
