Bauma China 2010 preview
09 November 2010
Although the first event was held as recently as 2002, Bauma China is already firmly established in the international calendar of construction equipment exhibitions. It will be held for the fifth time from November 23 to 26 this year at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) in the city's Pudong district, and will set another record for the amount of exhibition space used.
Two new halls have been built since the event was last held in 2008, so the amount of exhibition space will beat that year's record of 210000 m2. The last show saw 1608 exhibitors from 30 countries take stands, and it attracted 113000 visitors.
The organisers announced as early as February this year that the show was sold out, with exhibitor numbers hitting the 1700 mark and occupied space rising to 215000 m2. Visitor numbers are of course another matter, but the 113000 people who visited in 2008 represented a +40% rise on the figure of 80686 in 2006, so Bauma China certainly has a good track record in this department.
On of the reasons' the show has grown so fast is of course the relentless growth of the Chinese construction equipment industry over the last decade. However, Bauma China has also established itself as a genuine international event. In 2008 some 17000 of the visitors came from outside China and altogether 123 countries were represented. The biggest contingents came from India, Russia, Japan, Korea and Brazil, in that order.
The event's international credentials are also reflected in its exhibitors, with 702 of the 1608 participants in 2008 being companies from outside China. Germany, Italy, the US, Korea and Japan were the five largest national groups. This time around there is a co-operation agreement in place between the organisers, Messe München International (MMI), which runs the Bauma exhibition in Munich, Germany and the US-based Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), which had previously run a rival show in China called ConExpo Asia.
What's new?
Events like Bauma China are all about products of course, especially new machines, and many of China's domestic manufacturers will be using the show to unveil their latest machines. For international exhibitors however, the emphasis is often more on existing products that are being made available in China, or the wider Asian region for the first time.
There is an increasing trend for international manufacturer to make products specifically for developing markets such as China. The common theme is to build high quality, durable machines, but to strip out a lot of the options, high tech controls and expensive low emission engines that are either demanded by customers or required by law in markets like Europe, Japan and the US.
One example of this approach is Volvo, which will be showing ten machines at Bauma China, including a new 20 tonne excavator built exclusively for the Chinese market. A full specification is not yet available, but the company said, "The 20 tonne excavator is China-customised in terms of application and suitability, and is highly fuel efficient and productive."
JCB's stand meanwhile will feature its new 3CX backhoe loader, which was first unveiled to the world at April's Bauma exhibition in Munich. The company says it is the most fuel-efficient backhoe loader it has ever produced, with average fuel savings of -16% compared to previous models.
Other features include an improved, more comfortable cab, heated front windscreen, an in-cab hot drinks machine, power brakes and a more versatile attachment circuit.
Also on display will be a selection of the company's tracked excavators, including the JS220, which is built at its nearby factory in Pudong.
Sunward is best known for its compact excavators, but Bauma China will see it launch new lines of products into new sectors. These will include pavers, milling machines and cranes.
The paver is a 9 m model developed at the company's Tianjin factory, along with the new 1 m working width milling machines.
Also on display will be the SWE230S hybrid excavator, which the company says is now commercially available in China. Sunward says its new machine is -20% more energy efficient than a traditional design, and is -50% quieter during slewing. It also meets Tier 3 exhaust emission requirements.
The first machine in this range actually rolled off the production line in September, after five years of research & development by Sunward. "We traversed an extraordinary course which began with the study of hybrid excavator principles to simulation tests, bench scale tests, and commercialisation at last. All done with independent innovation," said Sunward president He Qinghua.
The company will also have electric excavators on display along with more traditional machines.
Lovol's stand will feature two new loaders and a new excavator. The ETX936
And ETX956 loaders feature improved styling and cooling as well as load sensing steering. The ETX956 is a long wheelbase model with a reinforced front frame for building and construction applications.
The latest excavator meanwhile is the FR220-7, a 22 tonne class machine that can be fitted with either a Cummins or Isuzu engine.
Atlas Copco's stand will feature its new HB 2000 heavy duty breaker, a 2 tonne unit featuring the PowerAdapt, which shuts the unit down if the oil pressure gets too high. The company says the HB 2000 offers +10% more power than its predecessor, the HB 2200
Other changes such as a new retaining bar and reinforced couplings make the unit more durable, and options include a non-dust version, automatic lubing systems, dust protection systems the AutoControl system to match blow energy to material hardness, and the VibroSilenced system to protect the operator from vibrations. The HB 2000 is suitable for 22 to 38 tonne excavators.
Also on display will be one of the company's Boomer XL3 D drilling rigs for drill & blast tunnelling. The new machine has what Atlas Copco describes as a direct control system, which is simpler than its more sophisticated electronic rigs.
It comes with a canopy as standard, while the optional cab features air conditioning and a noise level of just 80 dB(A). Another key option is the Feed Angle Measurement (FAM 3) system, which helps the operator drill more precisely. Power for the three-boom rig comes from a Tier- 3 compliant engine.
Cranes
One of the hardest machines to miss at Bauma China will be Zoomlion's new 1000 tonne capacity crawler crane, the QUY 1000. Offering a maximum lifting height of 195 m and more than 80 sensors and safety systems, the machine comes with a variety of standard and super lift options.
The crane features a modular design, making it easy to transport, assemble and disassemble, and is design for heavy lifting applications like power plant construction. Zoomlion says the load chart is such that the QUY1000 can lift a 650 tonne load at a 22 m radius.
Also new from the company, but perhaps in danger of being dwarfed on the stand is a 55 tonne capacity rough terrain crane, the RTC55.
New cranes will also be a feature of Sany's stand, with four new crawler cranes on display, the SYDC 400, SCC3000WE, SCC 3000 and SCC16000. Among the features of the SCC3000WE is a moveable counterweight, crane stability system and telescopic crawler tracks that can be expanded from their transport dimensions to a width of 4.8 m.
But most noticeable will be the SCC16000, a 1600 tonne heavy lift crawler. Features include a modular design and super lift counterweight, while the maximum boom length is 156 m. Sany says the crane can drive while under full load, and there is also a remote control option.
As reported in this month's equipment pages, Fuwa's stand will include a new 750 tonne crawler crane for wind farm applications. Promising a departure from traditional super lift designs, the company said its machine would feature a new turning bed that would allow it to lift 3 MW turbines with its 96 m main boom, but without the use of extra attachments.
Manitowoc's stand will feature the MLC100 crawler crane, which is built especially for the Chinese market at the company's factory in Zhangjiagang. Gilles Martin, executive vice president of Manitowoc's Asia-Pacific region, said "Transportability, reliability, ease-of-assembly and operating speed were all factors taken into consideration when developing the MLC100. We used our expertise as a truly global manufacturer to combine the best locally-available components with Manitowoc technology for a new class-leading range of crawler cranes."
Also new at the show will the 55 tonne capacity GT55 DongYue truck crane, built at the company's factory in TaiAn. A 25 tonne capacity model from the same joint venture will also be on show.
In terms of tower cranes, one of the newest models on display will be SCM's M2400, which offers a maximum capacity of 80 tonnes. The maximum working radius is 80 m, and the crane can lift 21.5 tonnes at its tip. It is available as a fixed crane or rail-mounted unit, with a free standing height of more than 90 m in both cases.
