Gammon Construction and Balfour Beatty win AMC facility contract

A joint venture company owned by infrastructure group Balfour Beatty and Hong Kong-based construction company Gammon Construction, has won a HK$4.75 billion (US$604 million) contract to build an Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) in Hong Kong.

The contract was awarded by Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation. The AMC will include an environmentally friendly seawater drying system, which will cool the entire building.

Construction of the facility, which will have an area of 108,000m2, will employ around 1,800 workers during the construction phase.

Balfour Beatty said that Gammon would use a range of methods and technologies, such as BIM, modularisation and off-site manufacturing, to ensure that the project will be delivered safely and efficiently.

Thomas Ho, Gammon chief executive, said, “This impressive and complex facility for one of Gammon’s long-term customers is designed to meet the increasing need for high-end on demand manufacturing in the region.

“This latest success is testament to our proven experience in constructing complex buildings and our market leading engineering and technical capability.”

The AMC facility is due to be completed in 2021.
