Mexico is a new market for Astaldi

Astaldi Group has been awarded two new construction contracts worth a combined total of €193million (US$231 million) for projects in Chile and Mexico.

The new construction contracts relate to two projects, the first of which is an Intermodal Hub at Mexico City’s new International Airport. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract is worth US$350 million, of which €120 million (US$143 million) refers to Astaldi Group’s stake.

The contract represents the firm’s first step in a new market, Mexico, which fits into Astaldi’s geographical diversification strategy. The works will be performed in joint venture with Arendal Group, one of the operators in Mexico’s infrastructure market.

The contract provides for the construction of a five floor facility, which will be used as a hub for land transport connected to the city’s new international airport, currently under construction.

The hub will have a total surface area of 450,000m². The works will have an estimated duration of 32 months, with the start date planned for June. The customer is Grupo Aeroportuario Ciudad México, the company in charge of building and operating Mexico City’s new international airport.

The second project is in Chile – the Recursos Norte Mining Project – and the construction contract is worth €73 million (US$87 million). The works are part of the project for the underground development of the El Teniente copper mine, stretching between elevations of 1,500 and 1,900m in the Andes, 80km south of Santiago de Chile. The work is expected to be completed by 2022.

The phase-one works involve designing and building two tunnels – one for access, the other to transport materials – totalling 5km in length.

The phase-two works, valued at €43 million (US$ 51.5 million), refer to building an additional 2.6km of access tunnel. CODELCO (Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile), a leading copper producer, is the customer.
