Amey has been named as the preferred bidder for Transport Scotland’s £540 million improved roads maintenance contract, for the north east region of the country.

The North East contract begins on the 16th of August and will run for eight years, with the option of a four-year extension.

It will see Amey carry out maintenance works that include the implementation of an enhanced winter and incident response service and the installation of enhanced communications.

The company will also incorporate new technology for the better management of trunk network assets and contracts, and for the delivery of maintenance activities.

With a total value of £1.27 billion, the North East contract is one of two contracts to be issued by Transport Scotland. Road maintenance specialist Bear Scotland was named as the preferred bidder for the North West contract.

Minister for Transport, Jenny Gilrut, said, “I’m pleased to name the preferred bidders for these new contracts, which will bring improved levels of service to the trunk road network in the north west and north east of Scotland.

“The improved resilience measures in these contracts aim to ensure consistent, predictable and reliable journeys for road users. The contracts also take into account the Scottish Government’s climate change and sustainability targets.

“Around 650 operational and professional jobs will be supported by these contracts and local firms are also set to benefit through the wider supply chain.”

Amey has been given several net zero targets to hit throughout the course of the contract.

Chief among them is that by 2025 the contractor’s car and van fleet must be comprised of 50% ultra-low emission vehicles. Amey must also install electric vehicle charging points, electric vehicle parking spaces and related signage at its central offices and depots.
