Airport plan unveiled

Dubai: The master plan for the 140 km2 Dubai World Central development in Jebel Ali, Dubai was unveiled last month. No figure for the total cost of construction has been released but over US$ 33 billion will be spent on infrastructure alone.

Central to the development is the Dubai World Central International Airport which will have six parallel 4.5 km runways and form the first phase of the project. Construction is expected to start in October this year and is scheduled to be completed in three years.

The development also includes the 7.16 km2 Residential City, which will be built in three phases with the first starting at the end of 2006, and the five phase 14.5 km2 Commercial City which is scheduled to start opening in 2009.

Construction work on the 25 km2Dubai Logistics City has already started and will open in stages from the end of 2007. The whole project is expected to be completed by 2020.
