AECOM to oversee port expansion in Ghana

12 October 2016

US engineering firm AECOM will oversee the expansion of Tema port in Ghana.

The firm has been contracted by Meridian Port Services to provide design and procurement management services, ahead of construction contracts being awarded on the US$ 1.5 billion project.

With completion anticipated by late 2019, the expanded port will include a dredged 19 m-deep port access channel, a 1.4 km-long quay with a 16 m draft, and a 4 km-long breakwater.

The project will treble the port’s current traffic – about 1 million twenty-foot-equivalent units, allowing the world’s largest container ships to use the facility and allowing it to become a competitive maritime hub in West Africa.

Project director Ozgur Balaban said, “AECOM is proud to manage this project on behalf MPS. Due to the size and complexity of the project, our team includes highly-experienced port project management professionals who have come to Tema from AECOM’s global organisation.”

“These port specialists will work with our local Ghanaian specialists, who are well-qualified in project controls, contract administration, construction management and environmental management. We have a truly multinational staff, representing nine nations and five continents.”
