World's first private spaceport unveiled
18 March 2008
A Foster + Partners and URS team has won an international competition to build the first private spaceport in the world - The New Mexico Spaceport Authority Building.
Designed to make a minimal impact on the environment, the building will have minimal embodied carbon, with few additional energy requirements.
It is designed to achieve Platinum accreditation under the US Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ratings system. The low-lying structure, dug into the landscape, will exploit its thermal mass to buffer it from temperature changes. It will also use wind for ventilation and natural light will enter through skylights.
