The final section of a steel spire has been lifted into position on the One World Trade Centre tower in New York, US, bringing the building to its full 1,776 ft (541.3 m) height and making it the tallest building in the country.

Scheduled to open at the end of this year, One World Trade Centre is being built on the site of the World Trade Centre twin towers which were destroyed in the 11 September, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The 408 ft (124.4 m), 758 ton (688 tonne) spire will serve as a broadcast antenna. An LED-powered light on the spire will be visible for miles, and a warning beacon was installed at its top.

One World Trade Centre will include 3 million ft2 (278,7100 m2) of office space on 71 office floors, a grand public lobby, and an observation deck. Contractor Tishman Realty & Construction is building the iconic tower for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
