Kobelco showcased a new 5.5 tonne mini excavator at ConExpo and also introduced three new large excavators at the show.

The new 55SRx compact excavator expands Kobelco's product line into a new class size. Its cab height is 2.5 m and the machine can operate with near zero tail swing, digging up to 3.9 m and delivering 50 kN of force. Power comes from a 39 hp (29.3 kW) engine.

"The new machine is ideal for work in tight spaces, such as along foundations, and delivers the power, performance and productivity found on a mid-sized excavator," Kobelco platform manager Reece Norwood said.

The 55SRx incorporates some features found on Kobelco's larger machines, including a cast centre swing foot and a heavy-duty reinforced boom and arm.

In addition to the new compact excavator, Kobelco also introduced three larger excavators at ConExpo - the SL260-9, SK295-9 and SK350-9. The machines weigh between 27 tonnes and 36 tonnes and can dig to depths of up to 7.6 m.

The new models are powered by engines which use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce emissions - a first for excavators, according to Kobelco. SCR is an after-treatment system which uses urea as a catalyst to reduce NOx emissions from diesel engines. The largest of the new excavators is powered by a 269 hp (201 kW) engine.

"By choosing SCR technology for meeting Tier 4 Interim emissions regulations, Kobelco provides leadership in engine performance, productivity and fuel efficiency," the company said, adding that the efficient combustion process in the new engines also "significantly" reduces fuel consumption.
