Joint venture mooted for engine after-treatment systems

06 August 2009

Three manufacturers are exploring the possibility of a joint venture in the area of exhaust-gas after treatments for off-highway machines ahead of the next stage of engine emissions regulations which come into effect in 2011.

Deutz, Robert Bosch GmbH, and J. Eberspächer GmbH & Co. KG have signed a memorandum of understanding relating to a tri-party collaboration, a statement from Deutz said.

The statement added each of the companies would bring their own expertise to the scheme. Engine manufacturer, Deutz has experience in the area of reducing diesel engine emissions, Bosch in the area of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) metering systems and electronic control units and Eberspächer in the area of exhaust gas after-treatment.

In the statement Deutz said the interested parties will now negotiate joint activities in the development, manufacture, and sale of diesel exhaust-gas treatment systems.

"With stricter emissions regulations coming into force from 2011 - Stage IIIB and IV in Europe, Tier 4 interim and Tier 4 final in the US, and comparable regulations in Japan - the demand for exhaust-gas treatment systems for this segment is growing significantly," Deutz said.

The company indicated as the negotiations stand at present, the planned joint venture would supply complete diesel exhaust systems to all engine and machinery manufacturers worldwide.

According to Deutz, the complete system would be made up of standardised modules with customised tubing and in mobile machinery especially, this would significantly increase flexibility with respect to installation space.

Depending on how the talks progress, the objective is to launch the joint venture and start series production as soon as possible.
