Challenging terrain

A total of four Volvo CE A40D ADTs are being used to haul material in the construction of a dam in Swaziland.

The joint venture company, CGI, comprising Concor, Group 5 and the Swazilandbased Inyatsi Construction, moved onto the 300 ha greenfield site in the town of Siphofaneni, 30 km south of Manzini, in December 2005. The project will be completed at the latest by March 2008.

CGI's project manager Eric Wisse said when complete, water will be distributed via a canal system, which in turn, is subject of a separate contract which will help irrigate agricultural areas in order to grow sugar cane.

Water will come from the Usuthu river via the concrete lined Lusip Feeder Canal. Mr Wisse said, “Average haul distances vary between 300 to 1500 m, with the machines having to negotiate challenging terrain and underfoot conditions.”
