Balfour Beatty widening Hong Kong road

Balfour Beatty’s Far East joint venture Gammon Construction has been awarded a HK$2.3 billion (US$293.1 million) contract to widen the Sai Sha Road in Shap Sze Heung, Sai Kung, Hong Kong.

The project was awarded to the UK-based contractor and Sanfield (Management) by Sun Hung Kai Properties.

The works will involve the widening of a section of the existing road from two lanes to dual two lanes, the development of a cycling track, the installation of noise barriers, the implementation of greening works to compensate for trees affected by the project, the construction of three footbridges, and extensive water and sewerage utility provisions, including the creation of two pumping stations and the installation of sewage pipes by tunnel boring machine along the existing roads 2.1km north of the project to the Ma On Shan area. It is intended that the risk of flooding will be eliminated.

It was said that a range of innovative solutions will be used in the project, from 4D BIM (building information modelling) for the construction of the pumping station, to the use of off-site modular construction techniques for the electrical and mechanical works. Other new solutions will include the use of drones and 3D land surveying techniques to monitor the 4.1km-long site area to record the project’s progress.

With an estimated workforce of approximately 600 expected to be employed at the project’s peak, the work is slated for completion in 2023.

Gammon Construction was also recently awarded the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link project in Hong Kong.
