A €300 million contract for the design, construction and maintenance over 15 years of a road project in the Hague, the Netherlands, has been awarded to Bam, the Dutch-based contractor.

The Rotterdamsebaan will be a new 4km connecting road between the motorway at the Ypenburg interchange (A4/A13) and the Hague’s Central Zone (Binckhorst-Centrum-Scheveningen).

Construction work on the project, awarded by the Municipality of the Hague, will start in mid-2016, and the first cars should be able to use the new road in the spring of 2020.

The Rotterdamsebaan will aim to provide better distribution of traffic to and from the highways and less congestion on the Utrechtsebaan. The new connecting road will will start at the Ypenburg interchange, making it accessible from the A4, A13 and the Laan van Hoornwijck.

The road will be partially below ground level in the Vlietzone, going completely underground by the current car park at Drievliet and the golf course. The underground section of the Rotterdamsebaan will be 1.8km in length, and it will run under the Westvlietweg, Voorburg-West, the Forum Hadriani archaeological site and the Binckhorst harbour. The road will then re-emerge at the surface in Binckhorst by the Zonweg, where it will connect to the Neherkade.

The joint venture will consist of Bam Infra and Bam’s German tunnel specialist Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau.
